The social news community Digg has been online since 2004 and rapidly grew in popularity leading up to the 2008 elections. Come 2011 the Digg team performed an overhaul on the system and completely revamped the site layout. This also broke the friends system, allowing big-name publishers to game the front page. This upset many powerhouse users who were furious with the major changes. Over time the site has slowly moved back towards its roots as a user-powered news community. And although the domain has lost some credibility, their design skills are still impeccable. So in this tutorial I want to explain how we can build a similar layout using static HTML5 and CSS3 properties. HTML5 and CSS3 are great languages to start off learning with, and I’ve always thought that one of the best ways to start learning is to just dive in and manipulate the code. As you could probably tell, this is where generators step in. They are a great way to generate some code, play with it, and learn. Not only that, they are incredibly useful because often times as a developer or designer we find we are doing things over and over again. Over the past few years, HTML5 has gone from mythical creature to vivid reality and has taken its share of hits from skeptics and experts alike as to its readiness and viability. Now, in 2012, HTML5 is ready for use with all modern browsers, including IE9. It has also been developed to gracefully degrade, even without help from JavaScript or CSS resets. Even still, you may be concerned about providing full backwards compatibility, or unsure of what will work in one browser and not another. HTML5 has commonly been blamed for the issues presented by jQuery and CSS3, both newer technologies and standards evolving alongside HTML5, but not actually a part of it.
