CMS: Useful Wins Again

CMS: Useful Wins Again

It’s been almost twenty years since the first branded Content Management Systems (CMSs) hit the market. They were an unbearable kluge back then, and didn’t work well; but hey, if you had a bajillion dollars to toss at MarchFirst or any one of hundreds of other pre-dot-bomb era consultancies, you could have a half-baked Web CMS, delivered by a team of twenty dot-commers living large on VC funds, and talkin’ you up in Red Herring or Business 2.0 Magazine. Hey, who doesn’t want that? The fast times flourished, and whoever could spew the most syllables per second of consultant-speak won the CMS implementation gig (seriously). Could designers design with it? Nope. Were writers or sitebuilders creating content with them? Not with WordPerfect or Claris Homepage in the next room. Nope, CMSs’ usefulness was often an afterthough … Read the rest of the article on : Speckyboy Design Magazine

10 Useful Apps to Recover a Lost or Stolen iPhone

10 Useful Apps to Recover a Lost or Stolen iPhone

Back in the days when you lose the standard mobile phone, the loss is limited to just the hardware. The new owner would probably just remove your SIM card and put in his or her own and no one would be the wiser. But with smartphones, this situation presents a larger set of problems. For starters, you will lose all your precious data: music, photos, apps and contacts. Getting a new phone would mean you have to start recollecting all these items from scratch. If hearing that gives you a headache, let me remind you that the person who has located your iPhone will also have access to all your online accounts: social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, personal emails — and if you are one of the many people who do their banking online, better change those passwords quick … Read the rest of the article on : hongkiat.com

15 great HTML5 and CSS3 generators

15 great HTML5 and CSS3 generators

HTML5 and CSS3 are great languages to start off learning with, and I’ve always thought that one of the best ways to start learning is to just dive in and manipulate the code. As you could probably tell, this is where generators step in. They are a great way to generate some code, play with it, and learn. Not only that, they are incredibly useful because often times as a developer or designer we find we are doing things over and over again. Well, generators can take off that edge and do those small things for you each time. As an example, I have a text-expander snippet that creates an HTML5 template that I wrote about here. Now, text-expander is great but it doesn’t solve every need, and in this case there is a big need for generators so I took the time to find 20 of my favorite and describe why … Read the rest of the article on : Webdesigner Depot

How To Download Your Data Stored Within Google Products [Quicktip]

Downloading your collection of data stored within Google products can be a tedious job, especially when you have been using Google for years across many different applications. Instead of scrolling and surfing page after page of your Google accounts and downloading each file, one after the other, be it the data and files from Google Docs, Google+, Buzz, contacts or even your photo album on Pic … Read the rest of the article on : hongkiat.com

Ignore the design, please

Ignore the design, please

“Hey, I want to show you something I built. Ignore the design please, it is not finished yet.” From school science fair projects to real world product prototypes, if I had a nickel every time I heard that sentence I would be a lot richer by now. The truth is that a lot of people ask us to ‘ignore the design’ simply because we humans tend to judge anything new that is shown to us by its looks. It is a universal truth. You can talk until you tire about how looks should take the seat behind functionality, usability and any new ‘ility’ that people might come up with in the future, the ugly truth (pun intended) is that good looks are important to warrant a second look. Functionality comes next. Neither can do without the other. In spite of this a lot of people gamble on the looks of a product and in exte … Read the rest of the article on : Speckyboy Design Magazine

Editor’s note: This is a guest contribution by Erik Hans Rasmussen who writes and designs custom t-shirts for Fibers. Erik can be faintly heard tweeting @LookRad.
